Coming soon to integrated-color. CRT’s have been king of the hill for high end graphics users. LCD Displays have been considered not up to par for these critical editing tasks. However if you compare the eye strain you feel after a long day staring at a CRT with the relaxed feeling after working on a good LCD you will long for an alternative to CRT flicker. The first time we saw the Eizo ColorEdge monitor two years ago we knew that the CRT was about to fall from it’s pedestal. These guys have created a monitor that photographers are falling in love with. Why all the excitement? First and foremost Eizo glass technology is way ahead of the pack. The viewing angle on these monitors is impressive. You don’t need to remain in the perfect viewing spot and you and your client can see the same thing without changing positions. There is no detectible variation in tone across the entire viewing area of the monitor. Their 10 bit LUT technology means that subtle gradations show no banding making it easier to be confident that what you see on your monitor is accurate. The backlight is set to run at 50-60% of it’s total output which means the bulb will run for three years of normal use before reaching it’s half life. Considering the monitor at maximum brightness, 200 c/m2 is too bright for most applications you are likely to run the monitor at a lower brightness extending its life even more. The five year warranty is five times that offered on an Apple Cinema Display. The backlight is controlled by a measurement device so you can count on a constant brightness from startup through hours of use. The most stunning example of how good this monitor is we witnessed at Graph Expo this year. Sitting next to the Sony Artisan, the present gold standard for critical viewing, the Eizo showed a wider color gamut, sharper detail and more contrast with increased detail in shadow areas. Coloreyes Display will drive all the hardware calibration functions in this monitor making it easy to create a stunningly accurate and neutral monitor profile. We sell the Eizo ColorEdge 21 because we see it as the top of the line product for our clients Eizo makes another line of monitors called the Slim Edge. The only differences between these monitors and the ColorEdge are an 8 bit instead of a 10 bit lut and no ability to drive the hardware calibration from ColorEyes or any other monitor calibration software. The glass and backlight technologies are the same making these monitors a great alternative for those among us looking to spend a bit less on a monitor. |
