Monitor Profiling with ColorEyes

Coloreyes Display is for users of just about every instrument for calibrating monitors.

How great is that. So no matter what instrument you own you are no longer locked into lesser software. Simply update to ColorEyes Display and get the most from your instrument.

Before reviewing the new features, we would like to thank Integrated Color Solutions for providing the opportunity to use their ground breaking monitor calibration technology built into Remote Director, a very sophisticated program for soft proofing, to build the best monitor calibration tool available. Why are we making a big deal out of Remote Director? Remote Soft Proofing is the holy grail of the print house of the future. Being able to sign off on a “proof” without leaving your office requires some very sophisticated technology for display. After all, your monitor has to exactly match the one at the print shop without some technician making a house call before each proof. The Display software built into Remote Director makes this all work, and now we have it in a stand alone calibration tool for monitors.

This is not the first time we have collaborated with ICS. ColorEyes Commercial and 20/20 are based on a joint effort with ICS to make camera profiling really work.

Features

So lets take a look at the features of ColorEyes Display. First while most display software will measure 30 or 40 patches, Coloreyes may measure 100 or more. Why so many? In the process of creating a smooth set of grays from white to black, Coloreyes not only makes sure each patch is gray but properly spaced so the distance between 10% and 20% brightness is actually 10 points, something we call adaptive gray balance. Many Display programs tout how fast they are at building a profile. We on the other hand are more concerned with quality. A ColorEyes profile may take 1/2 hour or more for a difficult monitor. But when it finishes you will have the best profile possible.

How bright can you go?

With ColorEyes Display, monitor brightness is based on the overall capabilities of your monitor. Display doesn’t just drive the brightness as high as it will go. There is no point in setting a bright white point if it means your blacks will be washed out. Using Display the maximum luminance of your monitor will be based on it’s ability to maintain an ideal contrast range. Over time your monitor will degrade, and Display will help you monitor that

Instruments matter.

We decided to pick the best instrument we could find, and the X-Rite DTP-94 known in another incarnation as the Monaco XR has been universally heralded as the best of the best for the price. We highly recommend the DTP-94 but regardless of whether you need a new instrument, or just new software Display will build great profiles.

DDC if really here. For two years now we have been selling software written by ICS that has had Direct Digital Communication. A protocol for driving the hardware in CRT monitors which increases the ease and accuracy of calibration. This new version of Display is DDC compliant and does not require any extra cable adapters to work. If you have a ddc monitor this is definitely valuable.

So how good is your monitor profile.

The new profile verification tool will tell you. It has always been a mystery just how good your profile was. After building a profile with ColorEyes you can check it out. Simply run the Profile Verification tool and there you have it. Save your data and a little graphing utility included with your software will help you track your monitor over time.

Think you see some color in your grays?

Some monitors, more so LCDs are sometimes not perfectly linear. In other words, that perfect gray balance is interrupted by a band of color that should not be there. Coloreyes reads a specific set of gray patches when building a profile. If you check the gray balance tool and see a band or two of color, you can quickly add those locations to the gray patch list. Away goes the color.

Have a color balanced viewing light?

We hope so. If you do there are two important features in Coloreyes to make the most of your ambient light. First you can measure the color temperature of the booth and apply that when building your monitor profile. No attachments are required. Color matching you display and light source are critical for accurate viewing. Also included with your software is a little utility to help you set brightness on your viewing light, to match your monitor

Particular about white point?

Use the white point adjustment tool to make your whites look just the way you want. A test image is provided to help you make those judgements.

Gamma, Gamma, Gamma. The debate rages on about how to set up your monitor and build profiles. A new patented technology for ICS called L* assures that your monitor will display great detail from the brightest near white, all the way down to the nearly black. We all want the most from our display systems and L* makes it happen

So why buy Display when there are better known tools out there. This is the best part. ColorEyes Display is the next step beyond Basiccolor Display, a program we have sold for two years now because of the advanced features it provides. DDC, ambient light measurement, adaptive gray balance and multiple instrument support have long been part of our Display offering. So while other companies are just beginning to offer these features we have years of experience in the field making them work to their maximum. Coloreyes Display with it’s heritage and new set of features is again the best tool for the job.
